After sending a quick reply to Theo’s message, Tobias sat down in front of the gang still whining about their innocence across from Eleven. Voices that cried out in surprise in the holding cell instantly fell silent, and the two men, Mike and Butch, shifted awkwardly where they sat on the bench.

“Well, to be honest, you know, I don’t particularly care whether you did it or not,” Tobias told them. “I know you’ve got this marvelous master guiding you, and I think your organization’s message is very noble.”

“…So then why are we having this conversation here?” one of the men—Butch—asked suspiciously.

“This is the only place we can talk.” Tobias smiled at him. “The interrogation rooms are always recording video and sound, after all.”

The two men looked at each other.

“I was really moved, too, by the idea of continental unification,” Tobias continued. “From what I could see with Grey, it seems pretty difficult to learn directly from the master. So I figured you guys could help me out.” He noticed the men’s eyes straying to Eleven. “Oh, you don’t have to worry about her. She’s only loyal to her duty. Diligent, a good kid. She’s not a threat to you.”

“…This reeks,” Mike spat.

“Well, I can’t really help that, can I? I mean, I work for the Criminal Investigation Bureau, and here I am trying to join your group. I’m deeply impressed by the Roremclad ideals, but I’m under tight watch. So it’s a real pleasure to meet some kindred spirits in this way.”

Butch shot a glance at Mike. It seemed that Mike was higher up the food chain. Tobias turned toward him, his smile widening.

“Look, this whole bank robbery—you needed to do it for the holy war, right?” he said. “Real brave stuff.”

“You got that outta Grey!” Mike snarled. “He’s a wimp, that one. A total coward!”

“Now, now.” Tobias held up his hands in protest and smiled amiably. “He was surprisingly faithful to Roremclad. And if he’d told me everything, well, I wouldn’t have had to come all the way down here, would I?”

“See, Mike?” Butch said reassuringly.

Mike sighed. “Whaddaya wanna know?”

“Right.” Tobias paused thoughtfully. “Maybe how you two encountered Roremclad. They don’t do public-facing work, right? I haven’t been able to make direct contact myself, in fact. So how’d you find them?”

“…They came to us as a charity. We owe ’em our lives,” Mike replied quietly.

Butch nodded and picked up where Mike left off. “The three of us used to work in this factory. But the place shut down all of a sudden, and we were tossed out on our asses. That factory did a real number on our throats and lungs… No way we were gonna find new jobs. We were stuck.”

“…Your throats and lungs?” Tobias repeated. “From what I can tell listening to you speak, though, you sound perfectly healthy.”

Butch shrugged while Mike answered, fed up.

“Was a real shithole. We were making paint and the guts for fusion bullets, but they were stingy SOBs when it came to equipment.
